AWD Conversion Parts List
Return to Swap Intro
The following is a general list of parts that will be needed for a FWD to AWD conversion.
I've compiled this list based upon the conversion done on my 1990 Legacy. The majority of the parts should be the same if not very similar
for the Imprezas, and second generation (1995-1999) Legacies. The third generation Legacies have a different rear suspension
setup, and will require slightly different components.
- AWD fuel tank
- Fuel separator & piping (Sedan & wagon separators are different)
- Rear crossmember
- Rear differential front member
- Rear differential rear member
- Rear differential
- AWD lateral links
- AWD rear hubs (If you have ABS, you'll need hubs with the ABS tone wheel)
- AWD rear axles
- AWD rear struts
- Exhaust shield
- Axle back muffler section
- Driveline (MT & AT drivelines are different lengths)
- AWD transmission
- Depending on the model year of your car and the parts you use in the swap, you may/should upgrade to the new style
anti-swaybar endlinks
- Note: Trailing links are the same for FWD & AWD vehicles
Again, the following is a general list of parts that will be needed for an automatic to 5-speed
manual transmission conversion.
- Manual transmission (Cable or hydraulic)
- Manual transmission crossmember
- Manual transmission driveline
- Clutch & pressure plate
- Flywheel
- Pilot & throw out bearing
- Shifter, linkage, and rear shifter support bushing
- Manual transmission clutch/brake pedal assembly (Cable or hydraulic)
- Clutch cable if cable operated
- Clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, and hoses if hydraulic operated
- Manual transmission starter
- Possibly a manual transmission cruise computer
- Possibly a manual transmission ECU
- Note: You will need a Subaru clutch alignment tool to align/install
the clutch properly
